I had never tried switching to a different identity, so I gave that a shot
today.  It's pretty much the same way, maybe ever so slightly more
responsive since there are not nearly as many messages in the new identity
as compared to my main identity.  But, it's a great idea to have a spare
"test" ID around to use for such occasions.  At any rate, as you and others
suspected Paul, it's most likely an unrelated bug that is hopefully being
worked on by the Entourage team right now.

As for archiving, I do that about every three or four months as part of my
backups.  Usually at that time I compact my database, but it doesn't sound
like I really need to do that since as long as I delete the archived
messages (which I do), it creates space in the database for more stuff
anyway.

So, thanks for all your input Paul (and everyone else too).  I'm off to
archive my messages...I figure I may as well do it now since I've been
thinking about it so much today.  hehe  Have a good day everyone!
