I had the same problem on my iMac 400 and my iBook 466. Their video cards
are not powerful enough to support Quartz Extreme. My new iBook 800 is much
faster, almost as fast as under OS 9. Which video card do you have?
Also, have you tried switching the display to thousands of colors? That
could make it faster.
