It's a little subtler than that. If you look at the source of messages you
get from a mailing list, you'll see that the "From" is the original sender,
and that the "To" is the mailing list, not you. (The list then redirects the
message on to its members without replacing the "To" in the headers.) So
regular rules looking for the list as the "From" won't find list messages.
That's one of the reasons the MLM was invented - then they added a lot more
clever things too. 

So if you put anything other than a mailing list into the MLM it probably
wouldn't do what you expect, since there are virtually no other kinds of
messages you get that are To someone else (unless you get a lot of redirects
from a particular person). And the MLM rules operate only if the "To", nit
the "From" is a mailing list (or something masquerading as one). There's
almost no use putting anything else in the MLM.

Then, as Diane says, MLM rules work only on mailing lists which you have
entered in the MLM.
