Not letting people's own self-expressions reach you in the form in which they sent them is to some degree "controlling", although it's not especially harmful if you don't try to get them to change. Some of them might not even realize that your plain text replies contain an unstated reprimand, if it's not stated. (I reply in the format of the sender, which is Entourage's humanistic default.) At the moment of writing I incorrectly thought you weren't reading the messages at all, which did seem to be a form of passive-aggressive control.
