I have read about a safety net on several posts and I don't really know what
you are referring to. I assume that every time I launch Entourage it loads a
database and determines what mail it has and has not retrieved from my mail
server. Correct?

Okay, forget about the beta testing, I should have known that mentioning it
would be a red herring, let's just say that my power goes out unexpectedly
and I am forced to restart my computer. Wouldn't Entourage look for the last
version of the database that was written and use it as a reference for
retrieving mail from that point forward? What would be the point of
Entourage throwing out what it knew was accurate before the crash? Imagine
if this was an accounting program, can you imagine how crazy it would be if
the program forgot which vendors you already paid, so just to be safe it
tells you to pay them all again?
