Thanks for the reply, Diane.  But I am not sure why you are suggesting this.
I have already verified that the "vanishing" message problem can occur with
a freshly repaired DB (using the "Rebuild Database" function in Database
Utility).  Does the mbox export/import process rebuild the DB in a more
thorough way?
