I honestly can not imagine how painful IMAP at 4GB would be.  As much as I
like IMAP, its hard to get users trained on how to use it, how to keep some
offline and some online email etc.
My experience with the truly huge databases is that they are mostly that big because of enormous attachments. Just getting them to not use the email database as a file system would go a long way towards keeping away from this limit.
