Do you or did you use Sync Services to sync with Apple Address Book? If so, have you checked there to see if your contacts are available?
I came across data loss for contacts that seemed to be initiated by Address Book. I found others complaining about the same thing in the Apple discussion forums, but I still don't know what application or sequence of events is to blame, and therefore I hesitate to lay blame without facts to back it up. Anyway, I first noticed the contacts were lost when my iChat buddy list reset to show _only_ the AIM screen names, and not display contact names. You may want to check into that avenue, if you were using Sync Services.
