It's not just about security, it's also about bloated file size. When users
have a pink striped background image, green funky text and a bunch of
animated emoticons, it drives up the size of the message exponentially.

This doesn't make any sense. In plain text messages the text is displayed in
a single font of the recipient's choosing. If someone is sending you e-mail
in absurdly small and dull fonts, then they're using HTML or Rich Text
formatting to do so.
