Dan,
Do you, by any chance, have a very large number of already-read messages
residing on various active folders in Entourage? By active folders, I mean
folders that Entourage filters your incoming mail into. Here is why I ask.
A short time back, Entourage (2004) on my Mac began freezing for 2 - 5
minutes after downloading mail. The progress line would disappear, and the
"ping" would occur, but nothing would work. After the 2 - 5 minute period,
everything would work fine. I finally noticed that I had nearly 2000
messages "filed" in my active folders, so I spend most of one afternoon
turning the important information into sticky notes then deleting the
messages from Entourage. (My thought was that perhaps Spotlight was having
to index each of them -- or some other such nonsense). In any event, once I
did that, the problem went away, and Entourage has worked perfectly every
since.
I have to say, I don't remember the spinning beach ball. It was just that
nothing worked. Perhaps I misremember. Hope this helps,
