Thanks Fred, I obviously missed your previous posts. I just tried disabling
the Spotlight pref in Entourage but it made no difference at all.

I've been trying to trouble shoot this problem by sending a batch of ten
test emails to myself. When Entourage tries to receive mail, I have noticed
that the Progress window shows that four emails are smoothly received, at
which point Entourage freezes for three to four seconds with a normal
cursor, followed by the spinning wheel. It seems as if Entourage is stuck on
the fifth email, although I think it's actually struggling with the ones
already received.

During the freeze, no new emails are visible in the inbox. After about 15
seconds, Entourage unfreezes for a split second and five messages are
instantly displayed in the inbox. Entourage then freezes again and repeats
the entire process as it retrieves the next five test emails.

>From this it appears that Entourage processes incoming emails in batches of
four or five, and is having trouble processing the emails once they have
been downloaded from the server for some reason. I've eliminated Rules,
Mailing List Manager, and Spotlight Preferences as possible culprits by
disabling these things and finding that they don't make any difference.

Right now I have about 10,000 emails stored in 22 folders. I wouldn't
consider that a "very large" number...more like just "large"...but maybe it
is, I don't know. I also currently have 117 projects in the Project Center
and thousands of tasks, notes, calendar events, and contacts in those
modules.

A couple of times a year I periodically archive and delete emails and
generally clean up the various modules, so next time I clean house (probably
over the holidays) I'll see if that makes any difference. If so, then I
guess Entourage just can't handle what I'm asking it to do. Thanks for the
suggestion.

In the mean time, does anybody have any suggestions as to what else I might
try?
