Hey Diane.

Yesterday I was online downloading mail when my laptop froze. A bit of background -- I installed a new piece of RAM last week. Sure enough, the grey screen of death appeared and I had a kernal panic. (RAM is now on its way back to its seller.)

When I restarted the laptop, all my programs that were open at the time, were fine, except for Entourage X. The logo would bounce a couple of times, I'd get the message that OSX had closed unexpectedly, would I like to reopen the program? I click yes, but then I get the second chance window that says "Try Again." And it's a never-ending round-robin.

The first thing I did was to back up my entire hard drive on the laptop.

Then I took the 2007 identity folder and put it on my desktop.

However, when I tried to open the 2007 identity on my (untouched or in any way damaged) Entourage on the desktop, I then got the same messages I had received on the laptop. So, I figured my next move was to rebuild the database.

At that point I tried to rebuild the 2007 identity database on my desktop.

The effort eventually failed, with a message that said, "Not enough memory."

I then tried an advanced rebuild, and it appeared to finish the process with no problem, going through all the proper steps.

I then removed all pertinent preference files I could find with the time and date concurrent with my trying to open Entourage on the desktop.

But, when I tried to open Entourage -- same messages. No go.

I then went back to the laptop and uninstalled and reinstalled Office. I also, once again, removed any pertinent preference files.

At that point, I could open Entourage on my desktop and set up another identity. But when I went to try and open the 2007 Identity file -- same thing as before.

I've searched the archives and it appears the program to extract files from a database that is listed is no longer being supported. I tried it anyway, and yes, the files seem to be intact, as I could actually see about 20 of them before the program stopped.

I also saw the comment about opening up the file with BBedit. But I would need someone to do this for me. I am no BBEdit expert. Not even a novice.

However I also saw a note about how if you get a "not enough memory" response when trying to rebuild, that this could mean a font is damaged.

BUT, I reinstalled Office, so shouldn't that have taken care of any font issue?

Unfortunately in my zeal to get my laptop backed up, I also overran my previous back-up, which had my email files from Jan-Feb. So at least I would have only lost two months. I know. Brilliant.

I can't believe there is no way to extract this mail, as it's clear the files are in there.

Any suggestions?

Thanks much!
