Hi Beth:

I wanted to let you know that I was able to resolve this problem, and it
was something I should have tried at the beginning of the whole drama; I
didn't because the user could release her MacBook Pro for very little
time.

1. I had the user copy her Microsoft User Data folder to her external
Firewire drive.

2. On a quiet Saturday morning, I started the process of rebuilding
her Entourage database through the Database Utility (all other methods
used failed to clear the Office Notifications).

3. After a few hours, the database went from 5.7GB down to 4.3GB in
size, and the Office Notifications came back to normal with just over
400 messages to dismiss.

4. I kept clicking the "Dismiss All" button every time it refreshed
itself until all messages were deleted. The Office Notifications
returned to its normal size and I was able to move it around the Desktop
without a problem.

5. I started up Entourage to update it and it worked just fine with
no unusual behavior noticed.

6. I heard from the user today (Tuesday) and all is well, all is
normal.

Thank you for your assistance and suggestions. Please put this in the
database for others to read if they come across this particular issue.

Steve

Subject: Re: Clearing Office Notifications in Office 2004

Hi Steve,

Just a guess here, but have her quit out of all Office apps and then
rename the following prefs file:

Home: Library: Preferences: Microsoft: com.microsoft.AlertsDaemon.plist

It's sufficient to just type an "x" before the "com" in the file name.

When she relaunches her Office apps, a new plist file will be created.
See if that clears the problem. If not, she can restore the original
plist file by renaming it back the way it was (after again quitting all
Office apps).

HTH,

Beth
