I've just done something VERY stupid.

I bought a new Mac Pro, and because there was a fair amount of digital
detritus on my old machine (Dual G5 running OS X 10.4.11) I decided to add
in a few "Leopord-only" apps on the new box before running the migration
assistant. That meant, of course, that the new box required creation of a
default administrative user account. What I didn't know was that the
migration assistant wouldn't put things from the old box into that account
(it complained that the new box already had an account with the same name
and password and insisted I change these for the transfer of "stuff" from
the old machine. The "what was he THINKING!!!! mistake I made was to believe
I could tweak preferences in the many folders of the second account created
on the new machine by the migration assistant, then copy everything I needed
into the correct places on the new machine. VERY bad idea.

For an hour or so last night, I had NO access to my Entourage database.
Eventually, by making copies of it, moving the copy to the desktop, and
correcting privileges, I was able to access my main user identity again.
HOWEVER, each time I launch Entourage I'm greeted by an alert dialog that
says "Unable to open preferences; an unknown error (-5000) occurred.

My guess is this means I still need to tweak some preference or plist file
preferences. Anyone have any idea which one and where it's located?

I've tried repairing privileges using Disk Utility. I can't use my current
DiskWarrior CD to attempt the same thing, because it won't start up the new
Mac Pro machines.

The Entourage debacle isn't my only problem. The other computers on my LAN
can't find the Mac Pro. I've not even CONSIDERED attempting a dot-mac sync
yet. I've had to reinstall many applications (actually, I removed Office
2004, then reinstalled and ran all the updates that the MS Autoupdater found
(not so auto; unlike Apple's System Update, the MS updater required a repeat
query after each update to find the next one).

I've also lost access to my Thawte PGP certificates by doing this silly
thing. I'll probably be back later to ask for help there :-(
