Jeroen and Kouta,

Perhaps the time is not right to try to create a European Native Tree Society,
but there are things that can be, and should be now today to move in that
direction. On the ENTS website a couple years ago I created an small index
page for posts on trees in Europe and Great Britain
http://www.nativetreesociety.org/worldtrees/europe/index_europe.htm

With your help, and perhaps the help of some friends on the Primal Forests -
Ancient Trees site, I would like to create a larger listing of websites with
information on trees and forests in Europe. I would include sites dedicated to
particular trees or forests, general tree websites, websites by forestry
industries, governmental agencies, tourist agencies, and private individuals.
They could deal with scientific information, trip reports, general discussions,
historical or cultural aspects of a particular tree or forest, or other type of
reference.

For a particular site I would want to include the following information:

1) Site title or name
2) Group or individual responsible for the site
3) Web address
4) Language or languages of the site
5) Locations discussed. If multiple countries are referred to by the website,
it would be categorized by its major focus, but the other locations discussed
should be listed in a description
6) Date the site was accessed
7) If possible a brief one or two line description of the site content.

Links to published articles and references would be included in the
bibliography. All of these would be compiled in a single Links Page organized
by country alphabetically. These would be posted as a page on the ENTS website
at the location listed above. After compilation, or at least when a fair
number of sites are included, I would contact each group or individual website
referenced and tell them of the web link page on European trees, and ask if
they are interested in adding a link to that page on their website.

By creating an interlinked network of sites the information would be more
easily and freely exchanged and viewed. It would allow us to expose other
groups to the ENTS website also. For websites that discuss, say a particular
historical tree as part of a larger website, that particular page could be
referenced rather than the home page for the entire larger website.

So how about it? Will you help me compile a comprehensive list of web links
and websites on European trees? You are more familiar with Europe and European
trees and forests than I. It is something worth doing. aside from general
search engines, another place to start would be to go to a favorite website and
copy their web links page, check those links out. then copy their web links and
check them out. I am sure if we work at it independently there will be some
duplication, but each of us would also find sites others have missed.

(It will be a few days or weeks before I update the website. I had a computer
malfunction, and I may or may not have backup copies of the unposted pages I
created in the past couple weeks in a backup file I can't access until the
computer is repaired. I do have a backup copy from a couple weeks ago, but I
would rather not redo the pages until I see if there is a need to do so.)
