Jenny, I assume you've heard of the former Hempstead Plains of Long Island, or have you? They were a natural grassland. Only a tiny, tiny fraction of the original acreage remains. I've never seen the place myself though. Otherwise, I would think that any ground left long enough would turn into forest. I'm sure there must be an article on the Hempstead Plains on Wikipedia.
