Jenny Search Serpentine barrens in SE Pa. There is a strip of serpentine rock that curves through this area and it is typically a meadow ecosystem. As Ed maentioned though the absence of wild fire has slowly caused organic matter to build up on top of the rock and trees start to grow on them. Pin and blackjack oaks mostly. Tyler Arboretum is "restoring their barrens by burning and clearing trees. The barrens are home to rare plants that can tolerate the bad, slightly toxic conditions. neat stuff.
Longwood Gardens maintains their meadows by burning annually too. Also check out the Bowman wildflower center in Pa.
