Wow. The Serpentine Barrens look like a fascinating place to visit. Not too far either. The Bowman Wildflower Center also looks great. Nice week-end trip!
Barry, yes you're right about Staten Island. And the vegetation on the exposed serpentine is much like that of the Pennsylvania barrens, from what I've read. Is Serpentine named after the adjective or is the adjective named after the rock formation?! I only found a few articles about Hempstead Plains. So little is left that the protected sites aren't open to visitors, it seems. Despite having some nice natural areas, Long Island is really depressing. So many developments and endless endless houses. I get really claustrophobic.
