"Yellow" pine is a synonym for the all the "hard" pines which are
distinguished from the "soft" pines by their generally harder wood,
abupt transition from early to latewood (and sometimes yellow color to
the wood), usually persistent fascicle sheath, cone scale usually thick
at the apex (and sometimes very well-armed like Table Mountain pine) and
needles in Fascicles of 2-3 (rarely five to 8). Almost all the pines in
the East are technically hard or "yellow "pines. Ponderosa pine in the
West is a yellow pine. The soft pines of which we only have one native
in the East (eastern white) have softer woods, gradual transition from
early to late wood (and less of a yellow color), fascicles 1-5, a
deciduous fascicle sheath and thin or unarmed cone scale at the apex.
The pitch pine at Cook Forest is no doubt the obvious "yellow" pine for
that area.

Subject: [ENTS] "yellow" pine

ENTS,

I often have folks ask about "yellow" pine at Cook Forest. I'm not
entirely sure what exact species they're talking about. They often
think that "yellow" pine is it's own species. A quick search of the
term on the internet suggests the term "yellow" pine is often made
towards a group of pine in the genus Pinus, but doesn't give an official
name, kind of like calling any pine found, "yellow" pine.

I'm thinking that they're most likely either talking about the park's
pitch pine, or possibly more likely... a fond nickname for the ancient
large old growth pine found here.

Can anyone clear this up for me? These folks even go far back as
claiming it as an old forestry term used to describe pine, but they
still can't distinguish an actual species.

Thanks,

Dale
