AJ: I am not surprised by the circumference. There are a number of trees that large in northern WI and MI.
The height, however, is a different story. The tallest tree I have ever measured in Upper Michigan is 152 feet, a former national champion white pine in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. I measured that in 1983 while doing field work for my Ph.D. That tree died and fell down in the mid 1990s. Another tree of similar circumference in the Porcupine Mountains was measured by Will Blozan in the early 2000s, and it was 148 feet tall, and was the national champion until it lost about 50 feet of its crown during a thunderstorm a few years ago. Paul Thompson was systematically off in his tree height measurements. As far as I can tell, a Thompson Foot is equal to 9 inches. This would reduce the 201 footer to about 151 feet, and the 181 footer to about 136 feet tall, heights which could occur in that area. I have not been to the white pine groves around Marquette, or the nearby Huron Mountains for a long time, so its hard to say what the size of the biggest trees there might be at this time.
