Steve:

It is suspicious that the measurements of Michigan trees are 
consistently off by a factor of 0.33 for those trees where we know the 
true height. A "Thompson Foot" is equal to 9 English inches, so that 
stated tree heights are about 1.33 times the actual height.  However, 
this result could also come from a piece of equipment that was not 
calibrated correctly, or from consistent use of the wrong triangulation 
method. We don't know whether it was intentional or not.
