True, we don't know what grew then for sure, but I don't think the genetic 
heritage of the species was lost. We don't see any evidence that the white pine 
can do much over 200 feet. Dr. Gordon Whitney did a thorough literature search 
in his "From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain". His conclusion was that on 
occasion, the white pine could reach 180 feet and very rarely to 200. That 
historic height range is supported by what we see today. 


It is interesting to speculate on the possibility of much taller trees in the 
1800s and before, but were I betting fellow, I'd bet against anything above 
220.

Well that's true, if and only if the assumption is made that there weren't any 
trees back then taller than 200'...we don't really definitively know, although 
white pines don't share the "biological mechanics" of the redwoods...
