Will, This is an interesting problem. To keep the same shape overall then the the height and radius would simply scale up the same percentage from those of existing trees. The average of 5 trees in New England - Grandfather Pine, Ice Glen Pine, Hiawatha Pine, Thoreau Pine, and Bryant Pine work out to be height of about 152 feet and a radius of 2 feet. Scaling up would yield a 300 foot tree with a radius of about 4 feet, or a diameter of 8 feet. That is consistent with the size given for the tree in the 1849 article.
We don't know the circumstances of what the logger told the reporter, or what the reporter may or may not have extrapolated, so debate on the specifics of what was said is kind of pointless.
