Dr. Van Pelt has done some modeling of the giant oaks in CA. He sent me some
photos and OMG, they are HUGE! Maybe he can post something about them soon,
but I know he is very busy with redwood research.

I agree with you.  California black oak is not larger than live oak.  In
fact, based upon the info I've dug up so far, California black oak is not
even the largest oak out West.  That honor belongs to valley oak (Q. lobata)
or sometimes called California white oak.  Some valley oaks are very large
and they are sometimes considered to be the largest oaks in the US, but I'm
not convinced.  I think live oaks are probably larger in volume and
certainly in mass.  As always the real problem is that we don't have ENTS
numbers for all of these super oaks so much of this is just guesswork until
we get solid numbers.
