Marc,

The western oaks are vastly larger than anything the east can put out. And
based on the photos and measurements of CA black oaks Dr. Van Pelt has shown
me, they alone would likely exceed the largest eastern oak- which you
correctly state is live oak (Q. virginiana).

I am having an argument with a friend on the west coast.  He claims
that California black oak (Quercus kelloggii) can get larger than any
oak species on the east coast.  Of course I disagree and that the Live
oaks of the south (East Coast &Louisiana) are the largest of North
America.  I have a small friendly wager riding on this, besides I
don't want the west coast to claim any more tree superlatives.  Look
