Hey Marc, You may want to wait on paying that bet. Here is the response I got from my friend Guy Sternberg, past President of the International Oak Society,
"Size is relative. Diameter? Height? Spread? Total mass? All of these are guesses: Some giant old Q. virginiana probably has the largest crown spread, and perhaps a Q. michauxii is the tallest. Trunk diameter might go to an ancient Q. robur. I believe a clone of Quercus havardii somewhere in western Texas might be the biggest overall, and perhaps the oldest, covering many acres but less than 2 meters tall."
