No, that's not it because the image is formed on the ground glass, and the ground 
glass is a set distance from your eye. No matter where on the ground glass you look, 
it's still only 2-3 inches from your eye.

Again, it's an optical illusion caused by the tiny size of the viewfinder image. If 
you were to use a magnifying glass to look at the ground glass instead of the prism, 
the out of focus areas would be more readily apparent.

Or maybe, the original poster's occupation has made him a little short-sighted. (joke)
