Some more details. The Pilgrims, after the Reformed tradition, which didn't
acknowledge traditional Christian festivals (holding feasts like Christmas
and Easter to be non-biblical), followed the custom of proclaiming a day of
prayer and thanksgiving. According to tradition, a feast was celebrated
which included the Indians who had helped them through the long winter
before. The original date probably was in October, corresponding to the
traditional Harvest Festival of Thanks (e.g. the German Erntedankfest).
During the Civil War, President Lincoln declared a national day of
Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, after a
military victory, and it became traditional ever since to have Thanksgiving
at this time in November.
