Terry Carroll WROTE (edited):

The problem is, she doesn't know what to look for in a tripod, and I
really don't know either, apart from the weight of the camera/lens.

I use the Canon Elan IIe, and will use a small variety of my three lenses,
none of them particularly heavy). I'd like to do landscapes and some
macro-level stuff, maybe fireworks some time. On very rare occasions,
some figure skating photography.

What should I tell her to look for?

A tripod that goes low to the ground if you do macro work, and a solid one.
My suggestion is check out the Slik 300DX, best for the money. I use this
and
also have a Bogen 3001. The latter is a bit short for people over 6 feet
tall,
unless you use their Boegn 3265 ballhead which adds height. You can have
the
Bogen modified to go nearly flat by Kirk Enterprises. You might even check
out
Kirk's website (I think it www.kirkenterprises.com) as they sell new and new
modified
Bogen tripods and heads.
