Canon cameras do not have exposure OK confirmation in viewfinder, the green
dot in
viewfinder is infocus confirmation. Flash exposure ok lamp you'll find on
your speedlight.
When you work in Tv mode camera calculates exposure based on available light
WITHOUT
taking speedlight into account! Therefore you'll be most probbably be
getting large apertures
or underexposure sign in you viewfinder. Also working in Av mode camera
calculates exposure
on available light and with f2.8 lens needed shuter speed was around 1/90.
Actually you weren't
useing your speedlight as ambient was enough for correct exposure. That's
why you ended up
with yellow tint on your prints.
I don't know how E-TTL work but what I do is set camera to desired speed in
Tv mode and
let TTL do the rest.
550 EX is strong enough but it's better to get a bit closer than 30-40
feet...
Good light
