Not quite right.  With the Elan II and 380EX, pressing the FEL (*) button will
tell you if the flash will be O.K.  If the lightning bolt stays solid, you're
OK, if it flashes, you're out of range (at least for the aperture and ISO you
have set).  I think you're right about the flash contributing little or nothing
to the exposure in the example below.  If you wanted to use Tv or Av mode,
setting the exposure compensation to -1 or 2 stops would allow some ambient
light, but the flash would be the primary source.
