With Canon macros you have to make allowance for the pupillary
magnification factor when manually setting exposures (flash or
ambient) or you can be out by a couple of stops:  easily.  I use a
minolta mini-receptor attachment for this which really is the
business.  To avoid complicated math I just calibrated it against the
camera while the camera + bellows + macro lens was looking at a grey
card.   Once you have done that ... and plotted it vs bellows
extension, ambient metering is reliable:  and independent of subject
colour/reflectivity/size in the frame etc etc.
