The 100 macro, with extension tubes (or bellows) AND a 1.4 or 2x
converter is a good way to get well beyond 1:1.

With 65mm of extension (Jessop's tubes) and a doubler (Canon 2x) you
can obtain excellent  images over 3.5 life-size.  Unlike the 65 you
still retain good working distance (clearance from end of lens
barrel).

But avoid too small an aperture:  diffraction really does start to
lose you more than the extra DOF gives back.
