Subject: AF in EOS bodies?
How does the AF speed and accuracy compare across bodies like the EOS 3 ,1
and A2. With a given USM lens , would AF performance be noticeably
different?
Hi Joe,
I used a pair of EOS 5QD bodies for a year shooting sports, mostly
motorsports, college football, local sailing events etc. and after a couple
of command dial failures switched to EOS 1N bodies a couple of years ago.
But before I bought into EOS 1N bodies I test shot a couple of events with
EOS 3s and found that for the money the EOS 1N was a better deal as the EOS
1N's AF was plenty good enough IMO and I liked the EOS 1N's more sturdy feel
and handling. The EOS 5/A2 body's AF performance is pretty good but doesn't
have a quite high enough a film advance rate for sports IMO when in AI-Servo
AF mode even with the ECF and only the center AF spot selected (this makes a
big difference in AF performance on the EOS 5/A2E body as there are many
more CPU cycles available to be used for AF). The EOS 5/A2E is very clearly
eclipsed by the EOS 1N/RS AF rate and film advance speed when used in
AI-Servo AF mode with another slight improvment in both mentioned areas when
stepping up to an EOS 3. The improvments are mainly in tracking and inital
focus aquisition as you get to the newer higher end bodies. For a sports
shooter this is good, for most other situation the EOS 5/A2 body is IMO
plenty fast and accurate. For a working sports shooter I'd recomend at
least the EOS 1N/RS or newer for AI-Servo focus speed and film advance
speed. For most anyone else buying an EOS body right now I'd recomend the
EOS 5/A2 as this is one of the best deals out there especially if you are
willing to buy used.
Regards,
Chip Louie
