Subject: RE: AF in EOS bodies?

For a working sports shooter I'd recomend at
least the EOS 1N/RS or newer for AI-Servo focus speed and film advance
speed. For most anyone else buying an EOS body right now I'd recomend the
EOS 5/A2 as this is one of the best deals out there especially if you are
willing to buy used.

Chip,
Why receommend an old body like the A2 when the Elan 7e is available and
runs circles around the EOS5/A2?
As to the EOS1n, agreed but I would recommend the EOS3 with PB-E2 (providing
you can live without a 100% viewfinder) which has faster AF than the 1N and
about the same price these days as a used EOS1N.
If you really need 10fps get the 1V with PB-E2. Fastest AF and tracking on
the market.
Hi Peter,
Because the original poster was asking about older bodies and explicitly
about the EOS 5/A2E body. As for new bodies I'd say an EOS 1N is still a
good place to start as they are inexpensive and bullet proof. Bullet proof
and a full finder (I shoot mainly chromes), is more important to me than the
EOS 3's slightly better AF speed and ability to retain AF operation with a
lens that is one stop slower. The faster EOS L glass has much higher
contrast and apparent sharpness than the slower L glass like EF 300 2.8L IS
and I already own the f/2.8 teles I need so the EOS 3 offer little IMO for
me and doesn't seem as rugged as the EOS 1N/RS family body. I have not used
a 1V in anger yet but have used one casually at the end of season NHRA
Finals in Pomona California and from one day of shooting with one body and
looking at my film I can say that AF noticably faster as is the film
advance! but even at 325MPH the EOS 1N is fast enough to work well. The
latest is not, IMO a necessity but really more of a niceity. Hey don't get
me wrong if I could justify the cost of buying a brace of three EOS 1Vs and
selling off the EOS 1Ns and old style boosters I have I would but the
performance differences are not compelling enough to rush out and buy them
when I still have a bunch of reliable (though high mileage), EOS 1Ns sitting
on the shelf. This is why the vast majority of shooters I see at major
college football, NBA, CART, NASCAR etc. events are still using EOS 1N and
RS bodies. It's just too hard to reconcile in your head to rush out and
spend $6K USD on pretty new bodies when the less good looking gear is still
working so well. Besides, all those marked up white lenses would detract
from the pretty new body mounted on them!
Regards,
Chip Louie
