I bought and used the S20. It was a superb scanner AS LONG AS YOU USE VUESCAN with
it!!!!!
The shadow noise referred to is NOT an artifact of the hardware, but a deficiency of
the HP supplied software.
Using Vuescan, it is often very difficult to tell scans from the S20 apart from those
of the Polaroid SS4000 I now use.
