As I mentioned in another post (not HP specific) this link reviews several

You should also note that there are at least two versions of this scanner,
with the S20 being the newer of the two. The S20 supports USB.
There appears to be an ongoing problem with HP Photosmart scanners with
noise patterns showing up on scans (see reviews in above link for details).
You may want to check your sample and return it for another sample if you
have the problem. Here is a short quote;
"Although the scanner tested here shows no evidence of spurious image
artefacts and patterning, unfortunately HP do not seem to have taken the
opportunity of the new model to deal with these problems. User reports
indicate that some samples of the S20 continue to exhibit the same
assortment of excessive shadow noise, gratuitous patterns and splodges which
affected the Photosmart."
