Actually, you get the international or World-Wide warranty if you by the
grey-market version. You can tell the difference because although both cards may
say "International Warranty" on them, the U.S. warranty cards also have "Canon
U.S.A., Inc."; also, there's no Japanese text on the U.S. cards.

What this means in practice is that you can have a grey item serviced under
warranty at one of Canon's factory service centers, but not at independent
Authorized Service Centers, whereas the ASCs will do warranty service on most
items (but not all) that have a U.S. warranty.
