Why don't you just call Canon at 1-800-OKCANON and ask.
I was told that it makes absolutely no difference except if they are giving
rebates or premiums such as teeshirts. Just make sure you have your dealer
sales receipt with the date of sale and item serial number. I personally have
never found it useful to go back to the dealer after a sale unless they will
pay the shipping to Canon or you think they will swap you a new lens. Unless
you live in mid-town Manhattan, the first reason is out.
Somehow, everyone seems to think the warranty card packed in the lens box is
the magic key. It's just a "feel good" piece of paper for the buyer. If you
send it in you are just helping Canon collect demographic information about
their customers.
