Thanks as always for your comments.  I have visited Art Morris' site
and I have his book, when he was still using exclusively the 400
f/5.6.  I read his comments about switching over to the 100-400 IS,
which is partly what is making me lean in that direction.  If it's
good enough for him, it should certainly do me.   I'm glad to hear
that it will work with the 1.4x extender!  I'm fairly sure that most
of my shooting will be done in light conditions that won't be a huge
concern.  Could you describe what kind of situations cause the AF to
hunt?  How extreme does it have to get? 

Also, how does the EOS 3 diffewr from the EOS 30/Elan 7 in this
regard?  I'm still not completely clear what bodies permit what.
Also, doesn't the 100-400 IS have FTM?  

Thanks again for your input, and sharing your beautiful shots.  As
soon as I get a slide scanner, I'll send you a shot or two that have
come out pretty well.
