I am also considering buying a 50mm lens. Why is the 50/1.8 less pleasurable? I
am still not sure if the 1.4 is really worth the price being four times the price
of the 1.8 and I don't want to spend too much money if the quality isn't much
better.

 * Full time manual focusing (fantastic combined with CF4)
  * Focus distance window (with absolutely useless DOF), IR compensation
mark
  * Metal vs. polycarbonate mount
  * A bit more solid construction
* Better manual focusing ring
   (the 1.8 has its ring at the front next to the filter thread)
* While it doesn't have ring USM, AF is still a lot quieter and faster

I think Karen and Thomas summed it up (above). In addition to the AF being
faster, I think it might be more precise with the 1.4. I find the 1.8 overshoots
and hunts slightly compared to the 1.4. I've compared the two I have for
sharpness, and can't really see a difference. They have slightly different
colour characteristics, but I can't say that I prefer one over the other.
