I'd say "go for the 100f2.8 Macro USM".
It fits your bill quite good: it's fast, allowing indoor handheld use; a great
portrait focal length, very sharp and it has the added value of letting you
get in close with your baby. As I did, you'll be tempted to take those little
toes and hands, the small mouth, etc...

When I became daddy (14 months ago) I had only the 28-135IS and I struggled a
lot with extension tubes to achieve the snaps I mentioned before.  I also
found myself very often at the long end.

Now that I have the 100f2.8, I wish I had it then... !  Well, good reason to
start working on the next one! ;-)
