Hello Richard,
   I've had the 28-135 IS for a few months now, and am very pleased with
it.  I don't have the experience to give you much of a qualitative report,
but IMHO the sharpness and contrast is excellent for the price range of
the lens.  The image stabilization really does work ... I'd guess it give
the equivalent of one, maybe two f-stops.
