While I think the prime would focus a bit closer, limiting myself to one
focal length was something I just couldn't bear. I love the zoom for the
choice. As for focusing closely, I've got some pretty good shots so far,
just tough to keep the tip of the nose in focus. After considering some
comments here, I think an extension tube will be too much even at the 12mm
tube. I'm going to try shooting some stopped down more, F22 or so, maybe I
can get the nose tip to stay sharp enough that way.
There's an EF 14 L over at the shop, used for a decent price. If my wife
didn't have to go to school, I would have already picked it up :-) Howver, I
might try putting some cash down on it to hold it for another month.
The trouble is, if I back off at 20mm to get the nose tip in focus, not
only do I lose alot of the nice distortion effect, but the image then would
need to be cropped. The prime is too expensive, I haven't seen one used.
I might check out the Tokina 17mm prime. I hope it's not too
expensive...
