That's what I do. I have a nature trekker that I use almost always. I
keep it loaded with film, filters my 300mm L lens, a macro lens and a wide
angle lens. My Eos 3 with the 28-135IS is kept in a top load canon belt
case. Its a bit heavy, but at least I get to carry everything.
I have found that for the most part, when I am using my 300 lens, I just
keep it and the camera mounted on a tripod or monopod and carry it over my
shoulder.
