I have never seen any empirical information nor a caveat from Canon that
damage to the camera's lens mount would occur from not directly supporting a
lens of the size/weight of the 100-400.

If you are intending to carry your camera with 100-400 attached in a bag on
a general basis, you will soon tire of having to remove them for every
shot--not to mention the shots that you will obviously miss.
