I do many hundreds of live band shots every year. Take the 70-200/2.8 and the 50/1.8 
(you can put this 50/1.8 in your pocket easily). My normal film for this kind of 
shooting is Fuji NHGII 800. I regularly shoot it rated at ISO 1250 and develop it with 
a +1 push.

The stage lighting at the prom will probably not be the greatest. If there is not 
enough light to shoot at f2.8 @1/60, you will have to use a flash.

1/60 is really the slowest you can go and still get acceptably sharp pictures. Unless 
they are seated, they will be more movement than you can stop with any longer shutter 
speed. 

Also, at f2.8, you don't get much depth of field. So, if you want what's in focus to 
stay in focus by the time your camera trips the shutter, avoid taking the shot if they 
are swaying forwards and backwards (side to side is OK).
