I have the Gitzo G1325 tripod (no center column) and the Manfrotto
Proball 468RC. I have found the combination works very well. I hike
either with the tripod in my hand or strapped to my daypack. My EOS
gear is in a fanny pack and the 100-400 either around my neck or in my
pack. Like you suggest I have one QR plate both for the camera and the
100-400 IS. Generally I prefer carrying the tripod ... it is light and
I've done 6 mile hikes this way. The Gitzo is not cheap however the
relative lightness of it makes it easy to hold while hiking and this
makes it easier to stop along the way to take photos.
The one thing to watch for with the Manfrotto ballhead is take care the
various knobs are tightened before you hike ... I've lost a few of mine.
Other than that I really like the flexibility it provides.
