That's not my type of shooting. But I guess, if the elk or bird doesn't 
fill a major part of the frame, my flash would be too weak to add much 
light anyway, except maybe in the dark. Otherwise, plain TTL probably 
wouldn't do much worse than E-TTL or any other reflective light based 
metering. Especially if you apply some flash exposure compensation based 
on experience.

  Would you use FEL in such a situation and wouldn't your subject be 
irritated by the preflash(es)?
