I was mostly just teasing with that post. I guessed from your post that you do a
lot of studio work?
But more seriously, a little E-TTL flash set to -1 exposure compensation can add
some unobtrusive 'sparkle' to a subject, or a catch-light in the eye, even when
the subject is too far away for a full flash exposure. And sometimes wildlife is
surprisingly tolerant of flash--more than of movement or noise, for example.
